Optimizing and validating a power supply design requires a number of important measurements. These include:
- Line-side power quality measurements, such as power factor and harmonics
- Switching device measurements, such as switching loss and safe operating area
- Output measurements, such as ripple
Although many of these measurements can be made manually, many engineers use automation tools on their oscilloscopes to achieve faster, more repeatable results.
This application note explains how to set up an oscilloscope to take these measurements, with emphasis on the 5 Series MSO oscilloscope equipped with 5-PWR analysis software. It gives a high-level overview of the various measurements, how they are used, and what results they provide.
